The online chronicles of a painter living in Austin, Texas

A BUSY YEAR
GOALS FOR 2005
You can only fail
if you set goals for yourself.

The last twelve months have been a whirlwind, and as every thirty days seemed to get tighter and tighter financially, I still held out hope of achieving the goals I set for myself at the beginning of the year.  I failed on all three, but not to worry, I've got all three back again for 2005, polished up, sparkly, and ready to go.  Without further ado, ideally, here's what will happen to me in the next twelve months:

  • Earn $13,000
Go ahead and laugh, but this goal has haunted me for years now.  Despite coming closer this year than ever before as a self employed artist, I still ended the year in even worse financial shape than I started.  Not that I let petty worries like money cramp my style, all I'm asking is that I can make a few extra dollars to not worry about rent every month.  Or food every week, or day as it may be.

  • Have a show outside of Austin, Texas
This is perhaps the biggest goal of all.  Austin is supportive of the arts, or at least talks the talk and has the whole 'Keep Austin Weird' mantra to support local businesses and the like, but art buyers are a rare breed in this town, and has been a subject of frustration in many conversations with artists in this town for as long as I've been here.  Stretching my legs some and having a show anywhere - Dallas, Houston, Kansas City, wherever, probably would be a very good thing.  But that takes money, and if I accomplish my first goal, maybe, then maybe...

  • Return to Europe
I haven't been abroad since October of 2001, three plus years of being surrounded by Americans driving around in big SUVs has put me in dire need of a break from it all.  As much as I love America, I desperately need to get the hell out of this country for a little while and recharge my soul and experience life without fiberglass strip malls and ubiquitous fast food restaurants once again.  I long for a change of pace and the fire in my heart that is lit when I stumble through some strange land.  Plus I've got a bunch of friends in Ireland that are waiting for me to make good on my promised return to Cork.  Maybe this will be the year.

And so that's it, those are the lofty goals I'm aiming for.  Of course, making rent on time each month, eating regularly, and buying new clothes every once in a while would be good too.  One of these years anyway.
