2006 YEAR IN REVIEW JANUARY - APRIL
The first four months of the year were all about painting, painting, painting. I spent hours after hours, neglecting my relationship, hygiene and my dwindling bank account to finish 30 new paintings in four months at breakneck speed for my show in April. Here's some of what went down:
The new year started off with a bang, with my website turning three years old, and I started working in on some of the themes that would show up in my paintings. As I assembled stretchers
and managed to sneak away from my studio for a night out at the opera escorted by Laura with Nathan and Cassandra. I also interviewed my studio-mate Shea Little about the Austin art scene, which would foreshadow the beginning of Austin's new artist run arts magazine, Cantanker.

FEBRUARY
Everything got hectic in February, and I was unexpectedly called into action by my friend DMac to help work for a few days setting up events surrounding the basketball All-Star game in Houston. It was the first time in years since I crossed paths with DMac and the week was filled with long hours, lots of drinking and the beginning of my year-long
obsession with game show host extraordinaire, Chuck Woolery. I left town with a new crew of friends, all conveniently located in Colorado.

MARCH
Austin in March is only about one thing, no matter how much you try to deny it or stay away from it: SXSW. This year, with my show's deadline looming large, I
accidentally snuck away on a five day bender where I ran into Dave from Swearing at Motorists, saw an intimate, amazing performance by the Flaming Lips, and somehow managed to survive two outrageous SXSW after-parties at Blue Genie.

APRIL
Besides running into a future failed candidate for Governor, April
was showtime. My parents flew in for the show, got to experience the joys of a rainy spring in Austin, and saw what four months of outrageous hours produced at my show, What If We Could Get It All Back? The show turned out well, and as usual, some of the work included was a surprise to myself. Of course, I think it was the opening salvo in the war against Austin's artful dodgers, those guys who drink free beer at openings all the time.
SOUNDTRACK:
"The W.A.N.D." The Flaming Lips
There was a palpable anticipation for the release of the Flaming Lips latest album. I was hoping they'd slink back to their rougher rock and roll roots, while dropping some of the 'up with people' spirit that has embodied and overtaken their onstage persona. I got both, with heavy rips off Pink Floyd and their old plugged in sound, along with a dose of some of the worst lyrics Wayne has ever written. Some folks never could make the release work for them, but it was a refreshing throwback to their
older work. They also employed an old
friend of mine (Janelle, the blonde rollergirl) in the video, which was filmed in my backyard in East Austin.
