| December 13, 2005 - It's hard to fathom another year has gone by the boards. 2005 was a big one, I not only turned thirty, kept the same charming girl by my side for all year, but I slipped through and managed to not have to answer to a boss for the third year in a row. So here's a month by month rundown of my activities for the year. You can always peruse the
archives for all the stories of the past three years. |

 | May
My work was progressing along really well into May, and the winds of change were blowing through Austin. Someone got the bright idea that drinking in bars was too unhealthy an activity if people smoked there as well. So, with the powers of Austin's do-gooder
and sympathetic cancer survivor and Texas' own Champion of France, Lance 'Live Strong' Armstrong on their side, the close vote went the way of worrying soccer moms in Westlake who may have never stepped into a bar in their life. Austhin was my little protest against their heavy handed civic action, which now has resulted in the impending departure of Lovejoys and the
possibility of a few other great bars as well. | | June My grandfather took ill in May, and I was fortunate enough to trade some art for a last minute flight to my hometown to see him on his 86th birthday. His condition had improved by the time I had arrived, and his buoyant spirit made for an
uplifting week spent with my aunts, uncles and cousins in Upstate New York. I then spent a week in Massachusetts crossing my old stomping grounds with my brother and sister, who stubbornly still haven't left for greener pastures. | |
July With my travels behind me, I focused in on painting and getting work done for my August show. The work centered around Americans and the funny idea that people in this country still believed the American Dream was alive and kicking. I think its alarmingly funny that so many people still have the belief that hard work and determination can bring a new level of prosperity when the current system, gerrymandered against the lower classes and run by imbeciles, has stacked the deck so far against it. I locked myself away in
studio for the month and painted like mad. | | August 'A Hopeless Romance' opened in late August, accompanied by a visit from my brother and his friend. The show wasn't without its fair share of anxiety,
but things turned out well as I sold enough to get through the rest of the year thanks to some generous patrons. I was impressed with how the show looked, and felt the themes and connections between the work in the show was deeper and tightly knit than anything I had ever done before. |
