Bio and Statement: Chris Chappell is a painter
living in Austin Texas. Currently working in a studio at the Blue Genie Art
Industries, he works in Oil, Pastel, and experiments in various
other media. Chris studied graphic design at the American College of Applied Arts in
Atlanta Georgia, in addition to dozens of random art courses
taken at the Austin Community College.
Chris has listened carefully to the endless
ramblings of various artist on how to paint and see properly. This constant attention to his art, along with a motivated
practice of painting every single day, has seen the large body
of work that has crisscrossed media and style develop into a
cohesive body of work centering around space, color and form.
His work takes various architectural elements, both from direct
observation and memories/visions and reconstructs them into a
flattened yet cubically constructed space. He
has studied the habits of many successful artists all around him
and tried not to follow them into despondency.
Chris has a two year old
subscription to "Art in America", and owns a copy Robert
Henri's "The Art Spirit", Nicolaides' "the Natural Way to
Draw". In addition to these resources that have
plagued artists for decades, Chris keeps a 1993 Monet calendar with twelve large prints
within arms reach of his easel. |
ABOUT THE SHOW:
This is the second painting
exhibition planned and put together by Austin painters Chris
Chappell and Michael Schliefke. In the fall of 2002, they
decided they wanted to pull together some of the stronger painters
in Austin and put on a great painting exhibition. In October
of 2003 this became a reality, as the
'Shoulda
Been a Plumber' show opened at East Austin's Blue Genie Art.
The show featured Philip Trussell, Nathan Jensen, Ethan
Azarian, and James Perrin, in addition to Chris and Michael's work.
There is another plumbing exhibition planned for October of 2004, please
contact Michael at the information listed below.
