May 14, 2004 - For this show, I did
something I have only done on two other occasions since 1996: I left my
love of oils behind and broke
out my acrylic paints and went to town. Unlike two quick and
rarely seen landscapes I did in my back yard in Ballincollig, Cork,
Ireland of the River Lee and surrounding hills, these paintings were a
bit more focused and to the point.
So, while cursing the insanely miniscule drying times, and battling the
colors trying to get the right mixes, I was able to turn out two small
paintings for the show that in some ways I am oddly intrigues by.
Turning to standard subject matter, I delved into the world of acrylics
with a cigarette girl study, then went a bit looser with a fat
politician wielding a butcher's knife and a map of the state of Texas.
The latter is called, "Your Politics Suck", and I was hoping Rick Perry
or one of his small minded minions (or any politician for that
matter) would purchase it and then find out the poison pill title
attached to the back.
The opening was a raucous affair, with hand
fans printed with the rules of buying etiquette were passed out to the
crowd, and exquisite food served by a man who looked like Kenny Rogers.
I met a few friendly faces, chatted up a storm, and soon the countdown
begin to 8:30, when the hundreds of little works faced the buyers for
the first time. When the countdown reached zero, the cigarette
girl painting was already sold, a pretty good feeling that will let me
sleep well for the time being.
