The online chronicles of a painter living in Austin, Texas

A PEEK INTO DECEMBER
AND THE PAINTINGS KEEP COMING

December 1, 2004 - The last month of the year seemed destined to arrive as a great time to regroup, refocus and take a long awaited deep breath.  After an insane couple of months of putting together the Shoulda Been a Plumber Too show, followed in rapid firings of the Personal Mythologies Show at the Daugherty, a quick setup of paintings at Cafe Mundi, and a one man wrecking ball show at Mojo's Daily Grind, and the opening of the doors of my studio to the East Austin Studio Tour, I thought things would settle down.  But life isn't like that, and I've found myself using the last bits of materials I have to start on some new and exciting works.

And the studio screams at me.  Everything feels like it is in true exploration mode.  Forms have been breaking down, the battles between line and color being won by the latter.  It feels good, this undiscovered country, seeing half painted canvases and not knowing the next step.  Paintings have been flowing fast and furious, I can hardly contain things by grabbing anything and everything around the studio that can double as a canvas.

And so it goes, burnt out and my nerves frayed, nervously wondering about where my meals will come from next week,  I'm still happier than I've been in a long time.  The work I've done in studio has seemed carefree and lighthearted of late, perhaps a reflection of the rest of my life at this point, but the excitement and hunger to produce and explore has captured my attention and kept me pushing.

I'm in the big Blue Genie Art Bazaar, where some of these new works will hang for the first time.  Despite having to hurry a bit and focus more than I'd like right now, I'm fairly excited about the show, and things should be good.   I'm also looking forward to the end of yet another action packed year, and the start of another one that looks even more promising.

Here's some pictures of the buzz happening in studio these days.

Scarecrow Interrupts Paradise
Large (66" x 88"), and a fun jaunt of fear penetrating Arcadia.

Check out the past year in studio:

I tried hard this year to capture the thoughts, ideas, progress and frustrations that rambled through my head as I stood in my studio holding a paintbrush in one hand and staring at a canvas for hours on end.  If you wonder about how my paintings end up the way they do, take some time to flip through the archives of my studio pages and see for yourself.

The Party Crashed
This painting has turned into a long journey ultimately ending in the gestures carrying the day.

Scene Makers
Still not there yet, this little painting has developed into a struggle not unlike jumping headfirst alone into a scene.

An odd little painting that has haunted me since it spilled out a few days ago.  In person, the pinks and oranges create a vibrant mood that I can't yet place.  Right now, this painting is gestating.

A couple showgirls, a leftover that didn't make the cut in October's Shoulda Been a Plumber Too show.  I've added a lot of darks, and can already see some future changes in the forms in my mind.

Another little painting with a seedy, tawdry backstage setting.  Again, pinks win the day, and I'm not worried about definitive forms in this at all.

A couple of 'green paintings' using my favorite sap green, causing the paintings to seem outdoors.  I like a lot of the shapes happening in the larger one.
