DECEMBER STUDIO UPDATE DRAWING LIKE MAD December 23, 2006 - Fresh off an insane and action packed EAST tour smack dab in the middle of November, I had one last event to get through for the year: the Blue Genie Art Bazaar. Preparing for this show is always one of the most exhausting things to do, especially coming off the hectic pace in the studio leading up to the studio tour. There's always a concern to balance art and commerce, and I decided to make
some shot glasses in addition to showing off some paintings and new drawings.
The drawings I worked on through December were a welcome relief from painting. Freed from concerns with color, I just developed a bunch of scenes and characters in offbeat situations. I approach the drawings very similarly to my paintings - I constantly draw and erase over and over until a composition develops. Without having to worry about color, I'm able to sift through light and dark and move through spaces faster and in a more playful manner. I also love the freedom drawing inherently possesses over painting
- it seems to be a much more free medium that allows for improvisation and the surreal.
I enjoyed working on these drawings, and I think I'll continue to emphasis drawing over the next couple of months - whether it be in the form of charcoal drawings, sketches or just layers upon layers of under painting on canvas. Here's some of the results of my work in December:
 The Opportunist |
A Night at the Albatross | The Confessional |
Je Me Soveins | The Live Oak |
 Cap'n Metro |
