JANUARY STUDIO UPDATE
DOUBLE TIME

January 21, 2007 - It's been a busy, busy couple of weeks to start the year.  I've been cranking out blank canvases for myself and others at a rapid clip, swimming in a pool of fertile ideas, and gathering steam for what should be one of the busiest years of shows in a long while.

Consider a rebirth of sorts after 2006.

I've started in on what will probably turn into a long and extensive series of new paintings sized 22" x 28".  It's a comfortable size, with enough room to meander through the canvas while not having to worry about filling out too large a space.

I've been working on my new paintings in a method that is closely related to the drawings that I did in December.  I've been using paint in a way that has made me think in terms of the positive and negative aspects of the black and white charcoal drawings.  The paintings have started out in sepia toned, burnt sienna and van dyke brown, slowly building the image from the cloudy depths.

I was initially considering dropping color off from the paintings all together, but instead tread into the depths with a bit of reservation.  I'm trying to set each painting into its own world by selecting a concentrated palette for each.

I'm also being more careful, in addition to limiting the size and concentrating the colors, in working on too many canvases at once.  I've worked on four right now, have three more stretched canvases ready and waiting, and will be stretching more to keep things going.

In addition to these paintings, I've been consciously scouting out some new locations to show throughout town, and may plan a few smaller shows at coffee shops and smaller alternative spaces throughout town, to stay in the public eye a bit more this year than last.  I also have been busily working on a small side project that hopefully will see the light of day soon.

So the year is off to a fast start, and as long as I can afford to paint, pay bills and keep producing some nice work, the year should turn out to be pretty productive.
