OUT OF THE BOTTLE...
RECENT MUSINGS FROM THE ARTIST STUDIOS AT BLUE GENIE
JUNE 2003
 |
Self portrait in front of Blue Genie's punk
rock entry into the
annual Flugtag Event. This 15 foot behemoth greets me
everyday I head into studio. The Flugtag ('Flying Day',
German) is the event where crazy people build giant crazy
things that are supposed to fly off a 30 foot ramp, eventually
landing in the waters below. This punk rocker was given wings,
but they didn't help the flight much.

The old F150 parked outside the studio next to Blue Genie's very own
art car, complete with one of
Rory
Skagen's monkeys. There's a nice feeling driving around
town in a big striped truck topped off with a bowling trophy and
running across one of the Blue Genie guys driving that lil' car and
waving. It gets the blood flowing. That and
Tecate. |

More recent works in various states of progress. I think the
painting of the three women (the three virtues?) is going to be
entitled 'Laredo Rojo'. I got the name after buying some
flavored shaved ice in the parking lot from the back of a Mexican
man's car on a really hot and humid day. When asked by my
studio mate Rita what flavor it was, I wasn't sure and
replied, "Well, it's red, it tastes kinda like Laredo Rojo."
The picture propped up against the easel is all about stockings and
women's cheeks.

| A view into part of the
new studio space, featuring the in process view of a painting I
refer to as 'Charlie's Angels'. It's about 6' x 4', and is
rolling along rather nicely, decapitated mannequin heads and all.
You'll notice the un-stretched stretchers to the right, there's
another 12 just waiting for paint out of view.
Did I
mention I sell those to artists? |
