August 14, 2003 Austin, Texas - I
walked into the Mercury with a curious, newfound swagger. A
slight buzz emanated through my head as I approached the doorman
without a ticket. He looked down at the guest list, 'Michael
Schliefke +1' and we were off, upstairs in a flash, to be greeted by
one of the freshest bands out there... Norman, Oklahoma's Starlight
Mints.
The show was underway with the Herb Alpert inspired sounds emanating from
the visually overwhelming stage. Mod designs playfully projected over the
band, as their upbeat and masterful music entertained the large crowd.
The stage was full of musicians playing guitars, drums, cellos, violins and
someone to make sure the mechanical beats were delivered in their own little
electronic way.
The Mints ran through much of their catalog,
sprinkling in older, slower songs with the quickly paced nuggets of love off
their latest album. Mixing in a healthy dose of Herb Alpert with some
young, vital punkish attitudes, UFO sound effects and a visual show that
dazzled, the Starlight Mints made the packed hall take notice and leave with
a smile.
