NO DOUBT -
THE SINGLES
July 14, 2003 - Yup, after living in quiet denial about just
how much I love No Doubt, I decided to come out of hiding and
purchase their latest CD, a collection of their best singles over
the years. My purchase wasn't without anxiety, I was prepared
to tell the guy behind the counter it was, um, 'for my girlfriend.'
No excuse was necessary, the transaction was completed harmlessly
and I went home with my hot new CD in hand.
First of all don't get me wrong, they aren't ska, they aren't great,
just a great pop band with luscious sounds and infectious grooves,
along with a pout, yet self aswsured tone to most of their songs.
The greatest song they ever could've recorded was Talk Talk's 'It's
My Life', it is perhaps the perfect vehicle for their SoCal pop
sounds and Gwen's style and themes.
So has the album let me down since I bought it? Not in the
least. And after years of hiding my love, getting to blare
their pop anthems in my truck whilst driving through town, or
running along to 'Just a Gril' about 8 years ago, I now proudly
listen to the album all the way through while in studio. Maybe
I'm just getting old, but I really like it. A lot. |
