yours truly with Pigeon John

SXSW 2006
BLACKALICIOUS
March 16-17, 2006 - I spent the day with Laura strolling through the hipster crowds downtown and wondering why everyone looked pretty much alike.  I played it cool, kept away from alcohol, and made it to Blue Genie on time for the first big after party of the week: Blackalicious, with Pigeon John and Cut Chemist.

The crowd was well behaved and a bit sparse for such a hip hop dream bill.  I didn't really know much about anything going into the event, but donned my Blue Genie shirt, came armed with a twelve pack, and strolled the warehouse turned after hours club with friends watching the show.

Pigeon John was pretty great onstage, with a funny offbeat delivery.  He was followed by Truthspeaker and Life Savers, who couldn't hold up against the sound and the fury that Blackalicious was about to unload on the partygoers.  By the end of the night, I was chatting about Austin's BBQ spots with cut Chemist as he waited for his tour manager to show up.  He seemed relieved to have played a good show in front of real fans, unlike a couple of industry heavy showcases earlier in the week.  After he was gone, I helped a drunken reveler find his way to a port-a-potty after he futilely tried to claw his way through a wall looking for the VIP bathroom.

By the time the end of the night rolled around, the sun was up and Kevin and I were eating breakfast at Starseeds.  After a quick car ride home, I was mumbling and stumbling over my words, too tired to think about anything but sleep.  I started to worry that Chris was going to call me way too early in the morning to head out and see day shows on Friday.

I was able to sleep in until noon, get some painting done, and then waited patiently, as Chris would soon be pulling up with his wife Liz to make our annual trek to the day parties down South Congress.
