November 16, 2004 - I'd like to say it all started innocently
enough, but rather, the abrupt challenge was laid down out of the blue.
Out of the expansive warehouse of
Blue Genie Art
Industries. After a hard day's work and a few beers, a ping
pong table was set up in the space that just hours earlier was filled
with sculptures and reliefs for Blue Genie's latest amazing endeavor.
Two thirds of the founding Genies Kevin Collins and Dana Younger started
mouthing off to me about the ping pong acumen of the artists at
Bolm Studios.
While I watched ping pong balls haphazardly bounce throughout the
studio, I warned the boys not to start something they couldn't finish,
as the highly skilled and practiced artists at Bolm Studios would really
fill their hearts with regret and defeat. Taking the dire warning
as an idle threat, the Genies continued to relentlessly trash talk and
fill the air with hot air.
| I gave the boys many a chance at an
out, having occupied a studio space inside the confines for a year,
I hate to see friends make mistakes. But as a member of Bolm
Studios now, my pride just gave them more rope to hang themselves.
With their intentions firmly in place, I headed back to Bolm and
delivered the challenge to Jana and Shea. They were headed out
the door, but nearly grabbed paddles right there, ready to defend
their honor and show the Genies' their rightful place at the back of
the line in the echelon of ping pong champions. |

With the challenge thrown down and voraciously accepted, the competition
will be held in public, with supporters of both sides able to cheer on
their respective teams. Other events may be added to the lineup,
which may or may not be limited to bowling, putt putt, darts and poker.
The dates and times are now being bandied about, teams are being put
together, and rest assured everyone has their game face on.
I stopped by the other day to deliver a ping pong ball with a message -
written in blue ink, it read, "Genies - You'll be Blue soon enough -
Bolm". The Genies replied with force, crushing the ball and making
an off handed comment about how that was like Bolm's chances.
Stay tuned for more information on the tournament, and pick a side,
bring some beer, and prepare to watch armageddon unfold.
