INTRODUCING...
THE MICHAEL SCHLIEFKE SANDWICH
June 29, 2005 - Tinkering in the kitchen is never a bad thing, and
when the mix of jokes, inspiration and kielbasa meshes in the right
way, how could the result be bad in any fashion?

A TRUE TEXAS TREAT
THE BIG KOLACHE
March 7, 2005 - After being
teased for months by the big sign that read, "The Big Kolache' for
months at the intersection of Oltorf and South Congress, the store
has finally opened, and I have to say, I've liked what I've tasted.
Follow this link to see and hear about my Big
Kolache experience.
THE NEW
NEW AT THE MARKET
MAGICALLY AND CHOCOLATY DELICIOUS?
February 15, 2005 - In the latest round of corporate greed, Lucky
Charms, always one of my favorite cereals of all time, has fallen
prey to Corporate America's fascination with brand expansion and has
added chocolate to its original recipe. (more

MEATLOAF...
THAT SPECIAL DISH
GUS' GRILL DAILY SPECIALS
December 16, 2004 - Besides my infinite love for hot dogs, I am an
ardent fan of meatloaf. I wasn't always such a big fan, and I am
still horrified and nearly vomit anytime I see a hard boiled egg stuck
in the middle of a meatloaf, but I've come around to no longer secretly
love this dish, but actually revel in its goodness. A special
treat in Austin is found on East 7th, at a little diner called 'Gus'
Grill' just over the Tillery Bridge before 183. (more

WITH HALLOWEEN AROUND THE CORNER...
A SPOOKY, GLUTTONOUS TREAT
October 25, 2004 - I don't know then the idea popped into my
head, but it wasn't long after I unwrapped an earl Halloween
package consisting of Monster Cereals and bags of candy that I
realized what I must do. Open up the box of one of my all
time favorite cereals, Boo Berry,. and don't stop eating until
it's all gone.

CHRIS AND MICHAEL GO TO THE DOGS...
LUCKY DOGS!
September 3, 2004 - Austin, Texas - It was like we died
and went to hot dog heaven. Chris and I found ourselves at
Austin's very own Chicago hot dog stand,
Lucky Dogs,
on Spicewood Springs Road. As Jean was busily checking off
exactly what she thought two poor painters would be interested in
eating, Chris sheepishly added, "Well, we both have a thing for hot
dogs..." Jean interrupted and said, "I've seen your websites, and
boy, do I know!" And with two Chicago Dogs, a bratwurst, Polish
Sausage, and an Italian Beef sandwich on our order slip for good measure
(with fries, rings and Cokes), we sat down and soaked up the atmosphere,
hungrily anticipating our hot dog feast. (more

ARTHUR BRYANTS'S BBQ
August 8,
2004 - I talked trash as soon as I got into town. I was going
to Arthur Bryant's, my favorite restaurant in the world, and I was
going to finish my plate and lick it clean. I was laughed at,
mocked, cheered on, and ultimately, given pointers as to how I could
accomplish that. In the past, I always made the mistake of
going on an empty stomach, I always felt that was my problem.
So after careful planning not to let that happen and to finally lick
a plate clean, I ended up going on an empty stomach once again.
A NEW DEN OF SIN AND HIPPNESS DAWNS IN
AUSTIN...
JACKALOPE OPENS ON SIXTH STREET
January 23, 2004 - Tired of the
relentless din of Casino El Camino, and with the idea of a new place
firmly implanted into my head by one of the Blue Genies, I wandered up
Sixth Street a little bit with my housemate April in tow. I walked
past Cucaracha, my home away from Casino, and ended up next door at the
newest place to hit the town for drinks:
Jackalope.
MOM'S HOME
COOKING
Chicken and rice was
always a favorite growing up, and as mom has established a tradition
for children returning home from college and the like, the kid
chooses the meal. In the past, I've gone chicken, lasagna,
spaghetti, and even once I inexplicably craved and requested
meatloaf. Ah, for the want of a home cooked meal. (more

IN N OUT
BURGERS
I debated for
weeks in my mind whether IN N OUT would be my first eating stop in
California or not. As it turned out, I chose to leave IN N OUT
for my second day in Orange County, feeling refreshed and more
grounded in my new digs. For most of my adult life, I've heard
just how good IN N OUT's burgers are, including the scene in the
immortal Big Lebowski where IN N OUT plays a
prominent role. (IN N
OUT BURGERS)
FATBURGER
After hearing about the
magnificent excess of FATBURGER after my dad's first visit to a
location in Las Vegas for the past year, I've been curious to find
out just how good the burgers really are. They are cooked to
order, served chock full of toppings, and fill out the bun at their
1/2 pound weight. But the burgers themselves? Ah, well,
they were good, but a taste more ordinary than the splendid
taste of IN N OUT. (More

PINK'S HOT DOGS
Hot dogs are one of
those foods that is beyond a love/hate relationship. I believe
they are a food that inspires simultaneous dread and wonder, and has
fueled many a monomaniacal compulsion. (more

LOCAL MAN EATS DOG
June 12, 2003 - Austin, Texas -
Chris Chappell could be a man on a
mission from God. Or perhaps he's just a man with a death wish. One
gets the feeling he could be swayed to believe either one.
One thing is certain: when Chris is around, good, greasy, food you can hardly imagine
(or digest) is
just around the corner. (more
