A NEW DEN OF SIN AND HIPPNESS DAWNS IN
AUSTIN...
JACKALOPE OPENS ON SIXTH STREET
January 23, 2004 - Tired of the
relentless din of Casino El Camino, and with the idea of a new place
firmly implanted into my head by one of the Blue Genies, I wandered up
Sixth Street a little bit with my housemate April in tow. I walked
past Cucaracha, my home away from Casino, and ended up next door at the
newest place to hit the town for drinks: Jackalope.
The two day old bar was quiet, almost too much at first, but we were
served drinks by April's friend and
Texas Roller Girl Electra Blu, and settled into one of the comfy
leather crescent lounge benches and started to soak in the atmosphere.
I noticed the old paintings of topless pinup girls on black velvet right
away, and begin to wryly smile at the size and ease the place had built
up.
April and I chatted for a bit, the
conversation mixed with the old country playing on the stereo, but
realized, much to our delight, that we could talk using our regular
voices and not have to strain to heart each other. The noisy din
of Casino flashed back into my head at that moment, and then I got up
and ordered another round of drinks, came back, and commented to April,
"I think we'll be seeing a lot more of this place." She agreed,
and Friday is only 4 days away.
