The weekend arrived with anticipation of big things.
Friday had Cafe Mundi's Halloween party penciled in, with the rest
of the weekend up for grabs. My last errand was a quick stop
at a florist, where I ordered one of the ugliest custom made
corsages seen by mankind since 1972. After returning home and
milling about the studio with last minute costume preparations, hair
and the like, Napoleon Dynamite was born. With my
corsage in hand, and three lovely ladies, a southern 'belle'. Air
France stewardess, and Marilyn Monroe flanking me, we arrived at
Mundi, where I have a show of paintings
hanging on the wall. I did get to eavesdrop
some of the folks who came in and checked out my paintings,
unbeknownst to them the artists was sitting three feet away.
In character the whole night, I would zoom off with my arms at my
side, exhaling 'ughs' under my breath, and spent a lot of time
looking for my prom date Trisha. At least four folks who saw
the movie came up to me and said they honestly didn't know my role
in the movie was severally miscast. After a couple
drinks, the whole gang emerged in various states of Halloween
festivities, and then Sonic Uke arrived to keep everyone grooving.
The costume contest was announced, and my table did really well,
with Marilyn and the stewardess pulling down prizes. But then
it was time for the big prize - a beach cruiser with fat whitewalls
- for best costume. I was busily working on drawing an upper
lip on a pad of paper I was carrying around all night when Napoleon
was announced as the winner.
Sonic Uke urged me to sing a song onstage, but
Napoleon can't sing, so I offered my signing abilities. With
an a cappella version of Bette Midler's 'The Rose', I signed away,
tepidly gesturing and concentrating, before getting on my new bike
and heading offstage. It was a dynamite moment. The bike
is intense - giant whitewlls, great curves, a sweet, sweet ride.
It's got a timeless class that is super cool, and was totally
unexpected.
I rode my bike home, and rejoined the three ladies
and headed downtown with another housemate joining the group.
Jackalope's cushy velvet theme fit the mood, and 'we cuddled around
a small table in the corner, chatting away until getting carried off
into the back porch, where a few dance steps were broken out and the
beers went down fast and easy. |
