PAINTING CLASSES

Each painting class is tailored towards the student's individualized interests and abilities.  Over the course of the eight weeks of classes, I help the student to discover their abilities and goals, and help them to achieve their own vision in their own style.  Students choose the subject matter, and I teach the basics of painting - color, composition, paint application and a bit of art history.  I believe in practice and learning through doing.  While some class time will be devoted towards color mixing, and various other technical aspects of painting, the main focus of the classes are to allow the student to develop and build confidence by painting.  I allow the student to pick their subject matter and themes, and I prod, push and help each student to achieve their goals and paintings.

It is my desire, after eight weeks of classes, to help a student develop the techniques and confidence to continue painting on their own.  Many of my students have a love of painting and art that is undeveloped or not given enough attention, and it is the act of painting, under a watchful and helpful eye, that helps to get over the hump of starting and developing a body of work that represents what they seek to achieve with painting.

Some students continue taking classes after eight weeks, others continue on with their own work on their own.  In the four years that I have taught classes from my studio, I have had lots of students from various levels, and handle each student on their own merits.  I lead classes with a steadying, confident hand, in a laid back atmosphere that promotes creativity and confidence.

CLASS INFORMATION
Classes are filled on a first come, first served basis.  Each class session is one and a half hour long, and meets once a week for eight weeks.  The full eight weeks of classes costs $200.  50% of the cost of classes is due on the first class.  I accept cash, checks and credit cards through Paypal.  Students may continue lessons at the cost of $25 per class, payable at the start of each session.

I am understanding of your schedule and allow for a limited number of classes to be postponed to the next week in the event something comes up and you can't make a scheduled class time.  I just ask that you not abuse this privilege and always notify me as early as possible of any planned absence.

During the class sessions, a palette, easel and liquid materials (water, turpentine, brush cleaners) will be provided.  Paints, canvasses, and brushes are the responsibility of the student.  I teach both oil and acrylic painting, but recommend beginning students to use acrylics, as they cost less, are easier to clean, and generally take less time than oils, which allows for more progress to be made during the class sessions.  I also have a list of basic and inexpensive materials will be provided if needed.

You can sign up for classes by emailing Michael at info@schliefkevision.com, or by calling him at 431-0612.

ABOUT MICHAEL SCHLIEFKE
I have lived in Austin as a self employed painter since 2002.  I graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute in 1997 with a Bachelor's Degree in Painting.  I have spent the past ten years painting, showing work and the making ends meet through a variety of art projects, including murals, animation and some commissions.  I have taught painting and drawing classes for four years, using lessons learned from professors, art history, and the harshest teacher of all, my own personal experience.  I encourage you to take a look at my portfolio and my studio updates to see my work and processes over the past few years.
