My parents outside the Texas Capitol.

MOM AND DAD COME TO AUSTIN

My parents made their way out to Austin to catch my show and see the sights.  So, in-between putting the finishing touches on my show, I played tour guide in my own town and showed them a bunch of what Austin has to offer. Here's how the visit went down:

The arrival, Texas stadiums, and Texas Capitol
Mt. Bonnell, food and art
San Antonio, the Alamo, and Italian food

San Antonio

For years, I'd heard about the Riverwalk.  I'd heard about how Kansas City redeveloped Brush Creek after the Riverwalk.  I've heard how pretty the Riverwalk is.  I've been to the Riverwalk about five times now, and I am bored to tears by the Riverwalk.  Sure it's pretty, and is a nice oasis in the middle of a large city, but all the restaurants, clubs, comedy shops all seem so similar and bland its disturbing.  Anyway, Mom loves it so we drove down to San Antonio to see it anyway.

The Alamo

Like every other non-Texan to find themselves in the heart of San Antonio standing outside the Alamo, my Dad stood in awe and uttered those magnificent words, "That's frickin' it?"

Yup, the Alamo is smaller than you think.  Unlike everything else in Texas, its a little bit small by today's blockbuster Hollywood standards.

But I still think its pretty impressive, and nice to walk through.  Plus the gift shop has a bunch of Davy Crockett hats and accessories that make great photo ops, despite what the signs hung all over the store say.

Frank and Angie's

It's really hard finding a few certain things to eat in Texas: a real deli with fresh sandwiches, a great cheesesteak, and Italian food.  Luckily, Austin has a really great Italian restaurant, and after returning from our trip to San Antonio and Gruene, we headed over to Frank and Angie's and gouged ourselves on some Italian delights.

It was my parent's last full meal in Texas, and we celebrated my birthday a few hours early.  No cake was served, as none of us could lift a fork by the time we got done eating our meals.
