The online chronicles of a painter living in Austin, Texas

A RETURN TO THE O.C.
THE WARM CALIFORNIA SUN...

I thought the above picture needed some more verticals in it.  Usually my fingers, thumb and hand haphazardly end up in a lot of pictures I take, so ending up with one that was a bit more focused seemed funny at the time.

SCRABBLE

It all started innocently enough, I beat my Mom at Scrabble and she told me to wait for my sister to arrive and challenge her.  I did.  Confident and feeling invincible, I lost the first five times I played her.  Some were heartbreaking - how can you find a place to use a V on your last turn and win by two points? - others were just embarrassing, even for the victor - "This has never happened to me" K. explained as she laughed and put down her second seven letter word of the game in a 113 point blow out.  Flabbergasted, I was determined to find a way to beat my sister.  My frustration grew, but I just kept challenging her.  I finally beat her a couple times, and found ways to counter her demoralizing and constant use of the word 'Aqua' along with her pluralizing words with S.  After a six days and thirteen matches, she won eight, and I went home with a paltry five wins and my ego shattered

HUMMER LIMOS AND GOLDEN FIRE HYDRANTS

There are very few places in the world where you can see Christmas decorations hanging from Palm Trees, Hummer stretch limos and golden fire hydrants.

Southern California is one of them.

And that's all that I'll say about that.

I IMAGINE THIS WAS JUST A TASTE OF WHAT PALM SPRINGS WOULD'VE BEEN LIKE...
My parents wanted to take the kids out on a family road trip - and the destination they chose was sunny Palm Springs.  Resigned to having to go, I did re-route our trip to see some giant, silly dinosaurs in Cabazon - but wasn't excited about the prospects of seeing the graves of the Rat Pack and Dinah Shore or whatever other remnants of the 50's and 60's culture this retirement community may behold.

I was reminded of the possible trip on a walk through one of the ritzy hotels that dot the OC coastline.  Inside, there was a gathering of old women in wheelchairs, all being carefully wheeled around Christmas trees and assorted decorations.  It was reminiscent of the opening scene of Bob Burden's Mystery Men in which a band of robbers steal the gems and watches off a rich banquet of retired folks in wheelchairs.

Of course, this pointless story and picture is the perfect segue to the real trip the family took:  the trip to Disneyland, the Happiest Place on Earth.
