A MIDWESTERN ADVENTURE
ARTHUR BRYANT'S AND OTHER DELIGHTS
October 8, 2005 - Of course no trip to Kansas City is complete
without gorging yourself in mass quantities of meat. Laura and
I ate at Minsky's, d'Bronx, and a hip little pizza joint in the
middle of Westport, but that was all a tune up for the big guns:
Gates and Arthur Bryant's.
There's very little I can say about Arthur Bryant's that
I haven't already said, so
instead of poring over old details of the food, sauce and total
experience at the original location at
17th and Brooklyn, I can tell you that this trip was different:
I was finally able to experience the event of eating mass quantities
of KC BBQ with my little 'godchild'. The pictures above are
not staged, and that was a true reaction to my BBQ eating from the
little one. Her parents were not aghast, as she dipped her BBW
in sauce and gave it a good go herself, managing to soil her white
long sleeve shirt in saucy goodness and help finish off one of the
smallest full portions of Arthur Bryant's inexplicably ever served.
Corey worked his way through the line a second time to order a
beef sandwich, and I struggled through the mounds of beef, sauce and
fries on my plate. I posed for an embarrassing picture
afterwards with my expecting friend, and when I thrust my belly out,
it far surpassed the seven months of work she put into hers.
The week that was culminated by being able to take everyone out
for a full family meal at the original
Stroud's Chicken on Troost, a decision that was questioned by
one Kansan, who recoiled at the thought of eating at the KC staple,
and suggested we go 'someplace nice, on the Plaza, perhaps the
Cheesecake Factory'. I shuddered at the thought and after
devouring my pan fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans, had
no doubt some dance steps are best left on the drawing board.
