A visit to Kansas City
MY SUMMER VACATION

by Michael Schliefke, age 31
My trip to Kansas City lasted ten full days, and it was a fun mixture of pure hedonism buttressed against active days with little children in a quiet family setting.  Needless to say, I never got much rest.  Between 3 am last calls and impromptu wake ups at 7:30 with energetic children, I never was able to fully recharge the batteries on any given day.

Yet the trip had a soothing affect - trading in the brash bravado of Austin for the meek understatement of Kansas City made it seem like I was on another planet sometimes.  The city and the institutions I love - my alma mater KCAI, the Nelson, Main Street, Arthur Bryant's, downtown itself - all are changing at an alarming rate - but still feel warm and comfortable, and their presence means almost as much to me as the great triumvirate of close friends I have remaining in town.

Over the next day or two, I'll be updating all the links to the right, so stay tuned for all the info on one of the most enjoyable trips I've taken in some time.
