SCHLIEFKEVISION IN KANSAS: |
KANSAS CITY EATS
Here's a run
down of some of the eateries that I patronized throughout my stay:
|
FRIC N FRAC |
Ah, a guilty, guilty greasy pleasure if there ever was one.
Bypassing their cheese steaks and sandwiches, I ended up being drawn
in by their signature Kelly's sandwich, smoked turkey, with chunks
of batter fried chicken sitting on a big roll and thoroughly covered
in all the fixins. Combined with the side order of curly
fries, I reveled in this choice.

|
OKLAHOMA JOE'S
BBQ |
After hearing so much about this place for ages, and not paying a
visit the last couple times out, I had the pleasure of standing in a
long line and ordering up one of their specialty BBQ sandwiches -
beef, sauce and rings matched with their peculiarly peppered and
flavored salty fries, this was a taste explosion that demands a
second taste.

|
TOWN TOPIC, OP
Style |
Town Topic, the veritable greasy spoon still kicking despite the
bloom of the Crossroads district. I've planned to attempt a
triple header there - starting with breakfast, moving on to double
cheeseburger and fries, and following up with a shake and a pie.
This visit was to their Kansas version of their original twin
diners, and the food carried the day, along with some charismatic
waitresses that made you forget exactly where you were.
|
|
WOODBRIDGE BBQ |
I was brought here on a tip from a friend it was the best BBQ
Merriam, Kansas has to offer. My suspicions, already in place,
were further aroused by the fact the place was empty. I'm not
one for following crowds, but just looking at the wastes of a native
Kansas Citian tells you they know where to go. The beef was
cold, unimpressive, and the sides seemed to be featured a bit more
prominently than what KC usually offers. This may fly in
Texas, but in KC, it's all about beef and sauce.

ARTHUR
BRYANT'S BBQ |
Is it heaven? Or is that much beef digesting in your stomach
one of the levels of hell? Check out the
Arthur Bryant's page
with pictures and find out for yourself.
|
|
GATES BBQ |
In my mind, I've always considered Gates as a primer for the
infinite glory that is Arthur Bryant's. I make it a point to
eat there every time out, and, this trip, I'd have to say their
stock rose to almost match Arthur Bryant's. I'm not sure what
they do to their burnt ends, and why their thick steak fries are so
enjoyable, but goddamn that is some fine ass BBQ.
|
|
MINSKY'S PIZZA |
Always a fine slice of pizza, great crust, loaded with toppings and
a great atmosphere too. Living in Texas has made me starved
for good Italian food, and just being back in Minsky's makes me
enjoy it all the more.
|
|
d'BRONX |
And speaking of Italian food, what good is it if you can't eat from
an Italian deli? I didn't make it to the original d'Bronx on
39th, instead I had to make due with their slightly less atmospheric
charge at Crown Center. The chicken
parmigian sub tasted the
same, although the roll wasn't as toasty, but it was still a
throwback treat.

|
STROUD'S
|
And the topper of the entire week in Kansas City was a trip out to
the home of pan fried chicken - Stroud's. This was the
complete meal that wouldn't stop coming - an oversized salad with a
thick layer of cheese started things off, followed by a gigantic
side of mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans with bacon and
assorted goodness strewn about, along with the main course: I went
with a plate sized piece of chicken fried chicken. Between
that, the pork chops, and the chicken fried steak on the table, we
were lucky to have gotten out of their alive, let alone on our own
power. A basket of sweet rolls taunted us throughout the meal
and proved to be a final flourish to an intense week of dietary
malnutrition of epic proportions.

SPECIAL MISSED
OPPORTUNITY: |
|
|
HARRY'S COUNTRY
CLUB |
After perusing the menu, (and placing an order for their 'cheapest
and finest' beer (a PBR was served), I found the one item that hit
the spot: a fried bologna sandwich. My mouth was watering,
ready to see those fried bands of bologna resting gently between
slices of white bread. As things go, everyone's luck runs out,
and on this night, so did the bologna. Having to pick a quick
second chance, I jumped on the pork rib ends appetizer, and made a
go of things, laughing away the rest of my time there and stumbling
upon a story that will rear its ugly head on SCHLIEFKEVISION soon
enough. Stay tuned. |
