MOM'S HOME COOKING

MOM'S HOME COOKING
Chicken and rice was always a favorite growing up, and as mom has established a tradition for children returning home from college and the like, the kid chooses the meal.  In the past, I've gone chicken, lasagna, spaghetti, and even once I inexplicably craved and requested meatloaf.  Ah, for the want of a home cooked meal.
My trip to the OC started with a home cooked meal of chicken, rice, and beans with breadcrumbs.  I'm sure there was other food there too, an entire table of Christmas cookies, candies, etc., but I greedily cleaned my plate a couple times before I took a second to look around.  My Dad asked when the last time I ate was, and I never really did give him a straight answer.

The week featured all the old standards: hot dogs, lasagna, chicken on Christmas, and of course, a giant pot of homemade spaghetti, just ripe for snitching.  I was caught a couple times skipping breakfast to snatch a cold meatball from the tepid pot as its presence taunted me on the stovetop.

Mom's cooking hasn't missed a beat, and hasn't turned to sushi and other So Cal entrees, so it was reassuring and definitely as filling as ever.  I ate like a squirrel saving up for the winter, and I may just live to see spring because of cooking like this:
