PINK'S HOT DOGS
Hot dogs are one of
those foods that is beyond a love/hate relationship. I believe
they are a food that inspires simultaneous dread and wonder, and has
fueled many a monomaniacal compulsion.
I myself did not eat
hot dogs, or cancer tubes as I called them, for several years, until
one day in the spring of 1997 I was persuaded to join the dark side
and devour a hot dog wrapped in white bread and covered in ketchup
from packets. |
It was a moment that really didn't change my life, but instead
set me on a new course instead: to revel in life's little
great moments that are happened upon. With the family in
tow, and the Los Angeles skyline peaking into the blue skies, I
spoke up and said I wanted to find an old fashioned hot dog
stand, one of those big pink stands shaped like a hot dog.
And I wanted to eat five hot dogs. With chili. With
cheese.
After asking around at the La Brea
Tarpits, we were directed to
Pinks,
a local hot dog stand that fit the bill that stood since 1939.
It wasn't shaped like a hot dog, but the line out the door and the
extensive menu with every combination
of dog (Italian, Polish, Chicago, New York) and condiment made me
smile.
I wavered back and forth from the NY
style dog with red onions, to a foot long chili cheese delight, to
the Huele Dawg, a double chili cheese served in one bun. I
finally chose the double dawg as my poison, and once the food was
served, the delight that overran my taste buds was unparalleled.
With a heaping portion of fries and a peach NEHI to wash things
down, the meal was deluxe.
