ON THE HOMEFRONT

 The new place
| April, 2010 - After a year long meditation south of the river, I moved back into East Austin and for the first time ever I can call 78702 my home. My house lies on a street with canopy, shady trees, and is within walking distance of practically everything, and it's a quiet, comfortable place to hunker down and let the worries of the world hang out someplace
else.
Nothing in the house is quite square, there seems to be a small foundation issue where some rooms' floors slope at about 17 degrees, but otherwise, it's a full on keeper!
|
| One of the funniest developments of my new place is the concrete squirrel permanently attached on the top of the steps on the porch. As David Ohlerking will gladly point out, I've always had a vaguely irrational hatred of squirrels, and the humor of the statue's presence on my front porch has been pointed out by more than a few
people. The house is full of charm, with an incredibly low hanging shower that must've been built for Napoleon himself. A few friends lived here before I did, and before them, a Pagan family lived here who painted all the ceilings black (re-painted white now) and probably did a lot of bizarre things, the remnants of which are on full display throughout - including the surprisingly understated decapitated head of a Virgin Mary statue in the garden in the front yard. |

nice little dogs on the gates of the fence | "they aren't yellow!" |
My porch. One of the most comfortable spots to drink in all of Austin, a place to curl up with a sketchbook and a beer. It's already worked its way into the pages of Volume Four, and it's changed the way I feel about staying in and having a beer at home.. |

the 'Good' Shed. Home to our laundry and also a litter of kittens from time to time. | Found tweak art. Notice the nail in the palm.
| I tell visitors that this translates to 'Pleasant Things'. It's an odd juxtaposition when you realize this sign
can be found on the shed in the next picture. |
The Creepy Shed. As seen in every horror movie you've ever watched, there' s a rumor this is also one of the Seven Portals to Hell. | | As the backyard stretches towards the back alley complete with a gigantic bamboo forest, there's one other point of interest - this Indian statue, which may or may not mean an Indian was buried there. Especially at night, this is the added bonus of creepiness
that makes folks long for the warmth and comfort of the front porch again.. |
