HOW THINGS USED TO BE

I found this picture while surfing the web a few nights ago. It was a pretty awesome find from my hometown of Schenectady, New York, which also is the hometown of General Electric. The main building of the once sprawling, beautiful brick building campus is in the background of the picture. Taken during an Electrical Workers Union strike in 1966 (the effect of which on Vietnam almost forced LBJ to issue a Presidential Injunction,
Citation #10923), the picture shows a non-striking employee being 'given the business' and not being allowed to head into work. Thank you, fat man in your cap, and white sweatered man who punched at the Suit's thigh. And thank you too, dashing Scott Bakula look-alike in the flannel shirt for registering your disdain. Without you guys fighting the good fight, my grandfather, aunts, uncles and parents couldn't have worked
at GE for such high wages with vacation times and benefits to raise their families and put the first generation of kids in my family through college and onto the road to a vaguely better standard of living through complete denial of the work Unions accomplished. |
