2011 - FEBRUARY STUDIO UPDATE

February, 2011- The processes and pace of painting have always been a good fight with my mind.  Painting is rarely an immediate event, usually it takes weeks for the painting to unfold and develop.  Every brushstroke, color, proportion and compositional element is scrutinized over, changed, redrawn and repainted with periodic breaks to sit back, contemplate and refocus.  Painting is a true form of problem solving – using visual cues, elements and having the knowledge and tools to create, express and reveal something to the viewer.  It’s rediscovering this process of starting, stopping and beginning again that feels fresh again.

When I walk into the studio, I see this mountain of work waiting for me everyday.
And all I can do is chip away at things.

With all of that said, there’s been another common feeling that has returned to me, guilt.  No longer am I content to spend the end of the evening at a bar finishing off a couple of beers watching the same crowds mill past me, instead I feel a healthy impulse to head back to the studio and at the very least, spend some time staring at my latest progress.  Of course, there are still nights when sneaking away is expected, and that’s part of the process too, letting your thoughts filter in the back of your head over unrelated conversation.

So far I’ve been toiling on canvases based off loose sketches.  I’ve spent more time developing the sketches and figures than I have in the past, which frees up some time from the rigors of making major readjustments on the canvas.  For the first few months, I’ve promised myself to stay away from any larger themes as well, although I’ve discovered this is harder to accomplish than I first imagined.  My mind wants to make the painting work and naturally draws on personal experience to present motives and actions that would push the painting farther.  Even acknowledging the personal narratives running through all of my work, I’m content to say that the disparate body of work I’m producing right now is more about formal issues and the act of painting than overreaching or overly personal matters.

I’ve also given myself a personal mission to complete one 45”x60” painting a month, in addition to whatever else is going on, with the goal of having a year’s worth of somewhat grandiose pictures that may or may not create a larger narrative of the year in some subconscious manner.  So far I’ve worked on two and am excited about the prospects of what feels like a personal side bet.

I’ve lined up the rest of the year with a bunch of shows and deadlines, none of which will present themselves to me until June at the earliest, which gives me plenty of time to keep making stretchers and just producing work.  The second half of the year will be dire crunch time, and I’ll probably have to redouble my efforts once again to keep my goals in line.

It’s been an exciting time in the studio so far.  I’ve enjoyed my work, but feel really humbled when I stand in front of my easel looking at the results.  I hope they'll come a time when I put everything together and create something really great, but right now its still just bits and pieces of the puzzle.  There's so many questions when you create art that begin to take their toll on your psyche and can swiftly undermine all your efforts.  For now, the most important thing is just to keep starting and finishing paintings before taking some time to reflect on my work at the end of March.

early version of the painting shown above

so many problems with this painting yet to fix -
drawing, proportion, color saturation among a thousand other things -
I'll probably take this picture down when it's all finished.

My first completed painting of the year -
It's titled 'The Bridesmaid', alternate title:  'Garden of Envy'

It's called an underpainting for a reason.
