I hate the sound of my own voice, so interviews are always a slippery slope for me. In the middle of November 2022, I was asked to appear on Artspeak Radio on KKFI.
This edition of Maria Vasquez Boyd’s Artspeak Radio included interviews with painter Vania Soto, the Belger Crane Yard‘s Consuelo Cruz, and finally finishing with yours truly, Kansas City painter Michael Schliefke.
I arrived early for the interview on the cold November day. Maria met me in the Green Room and we caught up after not seeing each other for too long a time! I showed her my Kansas City Magic Shrinks and gave her ea few postcards of my work. Soon we were shuffling off into the studio next door. I went last, so I sat quietly and began to get nervous about the interview as Consuelo had pages of notes before her. I could’ve started jotting down talking points or ideas but instead just decided to wing it.
Lots of ground was covered with a bunch of thoughtful questions from Maria Vasquez Boyd. We talked about my upcoming holiday show. My Magic Shrinks were also discussed and how side projects usually interject new directions in my main body of work. We also delved into my working habits, and the political nature of my larger oil painting. We also discussed how I approached work during the pandemic.
It was a really great interview with an easy going feel. Consuelo and Vania’s segments were interesting and full of great information. If you have the time, it is worth a listen! You can find it right here on KKFI’s website.
